Single Incision (Scarless) Surgery (SILS)

If you are morbidly obese and are looking for an effective and efficient way to lose weight quickly, lap band surgery or a gastric sleeve may be an ideal choice for you. Cutting calories and doing sit-ups can only take you so far in your weight loss journey; oftentimes, weight loss surgery such as lap band treatment is necessary to help you to finally reach the finish line—the point where you look and feel better than you may have felt in years, or perhaps better than you have ever felt in your life.

If you are trying to find a lap band surgeon who uses the most up-to-date techniques and technology, our bariatric surgery center team consists of accomplished surgeons who can help you to safely get down to your ideal weight.

The New York Bariatric Group is on the forefront of this new technology and are looking at ways to apply this technology to maybe one day perform a bariatric surgical procedure completely endoscopically with no incisions at all.

If you are thinking about having either Lap Band surgery or a gastric sleeve for weight loss, there is an advanced option you should consider. It’s called SILS, or Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery. New York Bariatric Groups is now offering a SILS option for both the gastric sleeve and gastric band surgery.

What is SILS?

When a surgeon uses the SILS technique, it means they make one small incision in the belly button. This results in a surgery that is virtually scarless. Single incision Lap Band and sleeve gastrectomy surgery generally involve less pain and little or no scarring. The actual operation is the same as it is during a typical laparoscopic band or sleeve gastrectomy. The difference is just in the number of incisions made. Since there is no need to cut through the stomach muscle, recovery time is shorter. SILS is different from a typical laparoscopic Lap Band or gastric sleeve, because in those operations our bariatric surgeons make 5 small incisions. Although these operations are also considered minimally invasive and the scars are quite small, SILS gives an even more advanced option, which includes an often unnoticeable, single scar in the belly button.

Why do we offer SILS?

We offer SILS because at New York Bariatric Group, we believe a comprehensive weight loss surgery practice should provide patients with a wide range of choices for treating obesity. Thanks to the combination of our expertise, cutting-edge technology, and unparalleled skills, we have achieved successful SILS gastric band and gastric sleeve results time and time again, and we can deliver these same results to you.

Dr. Shawn Garber was one of the first surgeons in the US to use the Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery approach for Lap Band surgery. Seeing the level of success and patient satisfaction, he then adapted this technique for laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery as well. We are on the forefront of this new technology. SILS minimally invasive gastric banding and gastric sleeve, offered by New York Bariatric Group, are amazingly innovative solutions for bariatric surgery.

Lap Band Surgery

The New York Bariatric Group can perform laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding as well as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and using the SILS technique.

Unlike standard laparoscopic surgery which uses 5 small incisions, Single Incision Lap-Band Surgery (SILS) is accomplished through one small incision in your umbilicus. It is accomplished with less pain, and little or no scarring. Since there is no need to cut through the stomach muscle, recovery is much shorter. The cosmetic results are amazing. Most patients have no visible scars after this form of surgery.

Lap Band Requirements

You must meet a few core lap band requirements in order to qualify for this type of procedure. First, you have to fall into one of the following categories: BMI of 40 Kg/M2-plus or BMI of 30 Kg/M2-plus with one or more medical problems related to obesity. These include, for example, joint pain, low back pain, acid reflux disease, severe arthritis, sleep apnea, type II diabetes, and high blood pressure.

You must also be 18 years old, and you must have attempted to lose weight several times in the past with just short-term success. In addition, you can only undergo the surgery if you are not suffering from another disease that might have caused your extra weight, and you cannot be pregnant, either. Drinking alcohol in excess will further disqualify you for this type of treatment. After the surgery, you must be committed to making major lifestyle and dietary changes in order to enjoy long-term results.

Why the New York Bariatric Group?

Dr. Garber is one of the first surgeons in the United States to use the SILS approach used in lap band treatment. He adapted this technique for laparoscopic sleeve surgery as well. He teaches other surgeons around the country.
